Until the 70s ‘U Salecaro was the old fishermen's port in Agropoli, where the local seamen landed and sheltered their boats, mostly small and medium-size traditional fishing boats.
‘U Salecaro is a place that lives on in the memories of many inhabitants of Agropoli today: there were few boats and few houses, you could smell the flavor of salt, hear the sounds of the sea and see nets scattered on the beach.
There, fishermen, with great efforts, recovered their boats. There, fishermen’s wives waited for the return of their husbands. There, cotton nets, that needed special attention and care, were downloaded: they had to be washed in fresh water, cleaned and mended.
There salt was sold, at an increased price, including transport from its collecting place Baia di Trentova, in the so called “salt rock” whose pits where filled with seawater, that evaporated and left back great quantities of salt.
Always there, from May to June, fishermen salted and stored anchovies and sardines in terracotta jars.
